Think long and hard before getting that Valentine's Day tattoo, urges ...

Showing up on a first date with an ex-lover's name tattooed to your body might be a bad idea.

Would you want to fumble toward second base if your partner had a massive "Anna Forever" heart tattooed on their shoulder? It would be hard not to feel like you were playing second fiddle.

"Think about that Led Zeppelin poster that was on your wall at 16," says Mike McLaine of Precision Laser Tattoo Removal in Toronto. "Think long and hard if you want to represent that image in 20 to 30 years time."

Apparently, a lot of folks don't.

So much so, that McLaine treats roughly 12 to 15 clients a day, operating six days a week.

With Valentine's Day nearly nearly here, McLaine is taking it upon himself to play Cupid by offering 50 per cent off tattoo removals.

"On the low end, it costs about $1,000 to remove a tattoo. On the high end, it can run you about $3,000," says McLaine in a telephone interview. "The process requires multiple treatments … It takes a long time and it hurts."

McLaine says he removes Looney Tunes characters most frequently. But in his three years of practice, the worst tattoo he's ever seen was a little more unique.

"This one gentleman had an enormousness Santa tattooed, with a face of a ghoul, smoking marijuana. He chalked it up to being young and stupid," he laughed.

If you're so inclined to profess your love to your significant other this Valentine's Day via a permanent tattoo, note that lighter colours, such as yellow, orange and green, are the hardest to remove.

Then again, you could always remove parts of it and draw around the rest of it, much like how Johnny Depp augmented his tattoo from "Winona Forever" to "Wino Forever."
